As many of you may have noticed, a large amount of shows have been delayed lately.
Most of this is due to the fact that the server we use (aka, the thing that does all the other things) is running some fairly old hardware and breaks rather frequently. Did you know 74.2% of Commie Enterprises is automated and the staff runs around like headless chickens when the server malfunctions? Now you do.
Anyway, the goal is a new server for the new year, but several issues are present:
– Buying (or renting) server parts costs money.
– Getting decent internet costs more money.
– Hosting said server parts on decent internet costs even more money. Monthly money, even.
Meanwhile at the International Bank of Commie…
I don’t like when I have to come on here and explicitly make a post to ask for things, but Gittip goals (now Gratipay, still the preferred source of funding) haven’t been met for months and a grand total of 3 people have donated through PayP. since it was set up again (and could still be shut down at any time ✓). So please, dig into those trust funds and open your duct tape wallets. Commie needs your help.

I didn’t do the math, but maybe it is cheaper to encode on something like Amazon EC2 while doing file transfers via cheap shared (web) hosting.
You can’t run Windows on those which makes encoding about 57 times harder.
Au contraire! EC2 can be ordered with Windows. It’s just a bit more (less than twice as) expensive.
And give Linux a chance. Tools like x264 and mkvmerge, even Aegisub run there, too and it is a lot easier to automate stuff.
Avisynth, however, does not.
That’s because it’s called AvxSynth there :D
It doesn’t support loading plugins compiled for Windows, though.
Which makes it pretty damn useless.

There’s really no requirement. Better hardware will always result in faster encodes, so if we can afford it, we’re pretty much going to get the best we can.
