What People Think Fansubbing Is And Why They Are Wrong (and other general information)

It has recently come to our attention here at Commie that Major Drama has occurred in a remote sector of the internets.

Massive textblog ahead.

It’s frankly entertaining to see how at least 90% of the people in that thread have no idea how fansubbing operates, why it can’t be stopped, and generally stupid people in general.

Without further ado:

So, basically… because people ripped the broadcast in Japan (assuming I have any idea how fansubbing works) and then subbed it… Funi has to take down their stream? I mean, I could understand it if the video leaked from them, but it didn’t. As is, I’m wondering why Funi’s been tasked with the impossible over something they had nothing to do with.

No, you see, the video was ripped as soon as it was released to the public, several hours (9 to be exact) before the first speedsub group finished it.

Well, I can only scratch my head like everybody else. Trying to read between the lines, the only thing I can come up with is that the FPC isn’t particularly worried about amateur fansubs, they just want Funi to be more proactive about shutting down rips of the Funi simulcast?

It’s physically impossible to make a video unrippable. If you can see it, you can rip it. No exceptions.

We understand your frustration, but it should be directed towards the speedsub groups that created this problem.

Lance Heiskell
Marketing Director

Alright this one is just hilarious. Even more so since it’s from actual staff.

Since the funimation video was ripped first, it:

A: Has the most downloads
B: Is uploaded on the majority of streaming sites
C: Provided the subtitles for the first group that released it (umee)

Sure is speedsub groups creating a problem.

No, it’s Japan’s fault for thinking you can stop the speedsub group based in Sweden who get their RAWs straight from a Japanese uploader.

Okay, seriously. Sweden is now the home of every internet pirate ever? How the hell do you even “base” a group, as each individual member works on their personal computer, in their spare time, all over the world. ALL over the world. I’ve worked with people from USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany, UK, France, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, and a whole shitload of other countries. You don’t “base” a group.

While expressing no opinion on the matter whatsoever, do not believe it when fansub/distro groups claim to be based overseas. Less than 10% actually are. Registering an overseas domain or using an overseas server does not make you based overseas, either literally or legally.

lol and 86.25% of statistics are made up, remember?

Pretty sure the speed sub groups won’t give a **** unless someone actually launches a DDoS attack or something that can cripple them and prevent them from uploading future episodes.

Say what? You’re going to DDoS every computer used by
a fansubber? You do realize that the entirety of the fansub can be made and released at a library or similar location? Are you going to DDoS every public institution with internet access as well?

Video or audio quality of it be damned, the show was perfectly watchable on your site. Fansubbers can spew their bullshit excuses related to those two ‘issues’ they often hide behind, but the plain and simple truth is SOMEONE IN THE INDUSTRY IS ALREADY DOING THEIR PROFITLESS JOB.
I mean, at this point, that is the ONLY reason I can imagine people do this. Because THEY are pissed off YOU and others like CR are making money (At least, this is an assumption) or making it OFFICIAL and therefore ‘tainting’ what they hold ‘sacred’ or some other reason they would pull out of their asses.

I do this because it’s fun. Chatting with online friends comes first, subbing whatever’s on the menu comes second.
You mad?

You know what I find hilarious? There are TWO “fansub” groups dedicated to ripping both the video and subtitles of Cruncyroll streams, but it’s Funimation that has to save the world because of this one show.

lol not naming names now are we eh? We’re still fans, and we’re still subbing. The term still stands.

I’m assuming for the sake of logical consistency that the FPC will pull the show from Fuji TV as well until the broadcaster pitches in and helps Funi wipe out all fansubbers/rippers on the Internet, yes?

Now there’s some correct thinking. But yeah, the only way to kill fansubs is to kill anime.

Howabout instead of heaping hate on Funi and Fractale’s creators, why not help out and anyone who knows anything about the speedsubbers send Lance a PM?
I mean, it certainly wouldn’rt hurt, and it would get a lot done. I find it wierd fans are always so quick to shame creators, distributors and publishers in a hateful manner for something beyond their control, but never, ever want to take fansubbers to task.

Why don’t we all go after HorribleSubs?

Yes, why don’t you. You’re absolutely the first person to come up with that idea from the several years horriblesubs has been around. Go do it. Get a lot done.

P.S. I don’t think you get what horriblesubs does. Everything they do is a direct rip of the original stream. That’s not called speedsubbing. That’s called ripping.

Everything is know about who subs what. All Lance apparently knows what speed sub group has ruffled the feathers of the FPC. Assuming that Funimation’s Anti-piracy team competent enough to google the name of the group and do a DNS lookup they should have all the legal information anyone here could get.

Congratulations, you have now placed the webmaster of the group in custody, assuming he was retarded enough to use his real information in the domain registry service. Now what are you going to do about the people in the group that do the actual subbing? Fansubs do not revolve around their website.

Take down a few of them, give the others a good scare. Having a few fansubbers go to court would probably help cut down on some things.

Given it’s just one show, if FUnimation puts it’s resources into it, I imagine they might pull things off. Keep in mind they’re perpetually getting stuff take offline as it is for *all* their shows, so I’m curious if shifting resources onto just one title might make a difference

Anyhoo, I mostly just want fans to stop being shortsighted, stop attacking Funimation and the show’s creators, and go after the real jerks who inspired this mess.

Arsenic—- we can’t go after fansubbers, but we can at least place blame on them rather than ranting at Funimation or whinging about all this on ANN’s forums nonstop. And I imagine there’s a handful of people reading this thread who might have info that could be helpful to Funi, so if you’re reading this, send them that info.

I apologize on the behalf of fansubbers that a automatic program managed to rip funimation’s video and release it to the entire internet. It’s all our fault, we did not mean to be jerks and of course we did not wish to cause this “mess”. We’ll take all the blame and die for another’s sins. No not really.

But also, last I checked, they weren’t “releasing” Fractale, since Funi has better security than CR, so going after them in this instance will not help.

Wrong, CR’s security is the best in the simulcasting industry. Source: The guy who leaked oreimo and several other shows.

…and that’s all folks. It would take way too much effort to point out every wrong point in that thread. If anyone has any more questions/concerns/comments feel free to post them.

Bonus Fun Fact: We’ve yet to see a single DMCA/takedown letter. I’ve been wanting one to hang on my wall.

Update:

FUNimation’s response

Yeah apparently I’m renown enough for people to go around posting with my name. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, although I gotta say this guy has a point.

Just out of curiosity how do you pay for a website without giving some real personal info? I’ve never created or run a website so I don’t know how that works.

  3. Pontificus says:

+3 for showing the stupidity of Funifags/Simulcastfags

  4. mr anon says:

You can’t los, follow the money and you will get the webmaster always, or you get someone dum enough to pay for someone else’s “illegal” activity, but to do this costs more money than a DMCA takedown notice. I say “illegal” activity in quotations because I don’t think that is true, fansubs provide a service that the media industry are too guarded to provide. The only way to combat fansubs is doing what FUNI were doing, competing against it, but now those fucktards have stopped it? morons.
And also registrars harass you to make you put a true identity up as I imagine they can get charged if ICANN finds false info on a registrar. I know this personally haha. Luckily enough you can buy domains outside of ICANN’s duristiction or you can a pay for the registrar to protect your public info only giving it out if a warrant is served. But most don’t bother which proves that regulation of the internet is too costly and can not be achieved.

On a side note, every anime I have bought on DVD I watched on a fansub first which means I only buy anime that I truly liked not some shit the industry pumped out. If fansubs were removed and we had to pay for streams I would probably not have enough money for DVD’s anymore so I would start watching something else that was free on the internet.

The Japan animation industry will survive without trading internationally anyway, the anime industry in Japan is fucking huge enough to support it.

    • An onymous am I says:

      >the anime industry in Japan is fucking huge enough to support it.

If only. The Anime industry is becoming smaller and smaller, and I find it hard to think that they aren’t desperate to find more supporters.

      • Basement Dad says:

I’m getting the feeling too. Each year, they release more crap and less good stuff, or less pearls I stumble upon.
I’m missing shows like Technolyze, Ergo Proxy, Casshern, and other dark sh!t.

Gee, I wonder if these two statements are related in some way.

The anime industry will survive, because it’s main market is and always was Japan, prior to us getting involved. But if it get’s to that, yes it will get smaller, much much smaller.

I’m keeping mine hands out of this one…
Though I do… have much to say to those FUnifags/CRunchyfags…

    Just ain’t worth it…
They are so devoted to that illusion in their minds that even “Imagine BREAKER” can’t destroy that illusion… *Sigh
    Oh well…
    Some things… truly can’t be help…

The only way to ever stop piracy of :content: is to stop the production of :content:. That goes for everything from Gucci wallets to double-dildos to intergalactic space stations.

So, FPC, stop creating them animus and no one’ll pirate your animus. Also, don’t shoot the messenger. Good fucking god I’m one smart son of a bitch.

P.S. Geoblocking your whole fucking webpage because *some* content have broadcasting limited to the USA is really fucking stupid, FUnimation.

I just wish they took down the illegal streaming sites… like, can something be dumber than them?

    • meh says:

As long as fansubs/ripped media exist so will stream/download sites for fansubbed/ripped media. It’s not like they have a choice of one or the other here.

  10. TG says:

No no, you have to link fansubbers to Mooslim terrorists, that’s how you shut them down. Funi’s not thinking outside the (torture) box!

  11. shadow says:

So I’ve looked into it and basically it seems to come down to 2 things:

    1. The particular time slot Fractale had was licensed for simulcasting. Upon learning that this was happening the production team panicked for some reason and threw a fit.

    2. Some sources indicate that Japan has made progress in fighting piracy and they cite this as a reason. Unfortunately in this case Japan doesn’t understand that in the U.S. legal system it takes millions to prosecute and you will only get a few thousand back while the lawyers take all of it. It also means Japan probably has more arrests for piracy lately that make them feel like they’re accomplishing something, but probably aren’t.

Also thought: Funimation has the distribution rights, so it seems logical that they also have the obligation to bring lawsuits as well.

  12. Z says:

man. this was hilarious to read. to actually think that fansubbing would die. if they really wanted to kill anime, like the post said, just stop airing it or just release it direct to dvds. but isn’t fansub a way to spread the anime to the public?

  13. Fag It says:

“The only way to kill fansubs is to kill anime.”

    Said.

Fansubs will never die, so long as anime lives.

  14. Edward_Bebop says:

+1 to the FPC for this brilliant economic move, they have now lost all English speaking revenue for their product, and at the same time guaranteed the amount of non licensed distribution of their show will only increase as their would-be market share looks to the only remaining source, the so called “Pirates” – Eye patches hooooo

  15. Cool Guy says:

    >If only we had a KillAllFansubs.exe to run on the internet.

    Faggots

  16. Cosmonaut says:

So where do all these ANN posters who only watch the ‘legal’ versions come from? Is it worth it just so you can feel good backing up corporate copyright laws? I thought everyone watched fansubs.

I quote Simon Jones of Icarus Publishing, (via http://www.insidescanlation.com) “Hey, I’ve read scanlations. Everyone in this industry has at one point or another, and many probably still do; anyone who says otherwise is lying, over the age of 50, or not a true fan at all.”

  17. HayateM says:

    ┐(´_ゝ`)┌

  18. M@ye says:

“So, I just checked out a forum that hosts fansubs, and I’m seeing the names HorribleSubs, umee, and UTW. I’ll need to search for them, but I could probably find them and hand over the sites to Lance.”

    Go hero.
