Trying to help fansubbing

Languages are organic. I figured it was time to notify the responsible bodies of the latest developments.

P.S. Yeah, I actually sent this of course.

    Dear Mr. Oxford,

May I please troll your dictionary? I’d be delighted if I could.

    Best Regards,

    xDDDDDDDDDDDD

  5. anon says:

I thought that it was correct and used in English as a norm. That shows how much study I still have ahead of me.

    • airco says:

It’s not necessarily improper English, but it certainly sounds awkward, and is basically the catchphrase of lazy fansubbers.

But I saw it in an X-Men comic one time, if that makes any difference.

    • Commander Bubble says:

      It can’t be helped i guess…

  6. jojo says:

    You did good.

  7. J says:

Tell me you sent that, and don’t lie in the process.

In other news, Steins;Gate 12 when?

  8. Matteas says:

“Dear Sir or Madam, you just have to include it in the OED. It can’t be helped.”

  9. masat says:

Thanks for the free advertising! :3

  10. asgardian says:

I guess some equivalent of this would be:

“There’s nothing you/I/we can do about it.” (I often hear this from Indian nationals)

“What to do?” (I often hear this from Greeks)

  11. Fag It says:

I was going to say “S;G 12 where?” but this just totally blew my mind.

  12. miraikirai says:

    Щто поделать десу

  13. Hurf says:

From the Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary:

    it can’t be helped

used to say that an unpleasant or painful situation, or an unwanted duty cannot be avoided and must be accepted

“I really didn’t want to go away this weekend but, oh well, it can’t be helped.”

    From http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/it-can-t-be-helped

Now stop complaining about a perfectly valid English language phrase.

    edit:
All the more reason the OED should include it!

    • Hurf says:

Hahaha, sure, all the more reason :).

That said, my point stands: too many people have been complaining about a perfectly valid phrase for too long. Let’s just drop this specific complaint already and move on. Hint: examples of bad editing in fansubbing are legion; one can just pick another.

      But yeah, I laughed nevertheless.

      • Durf says:

People were complaining about that phrase? It’s perfectly legitimate one.
Although Doki are shit subs anyway.

      >Now stop complaining about a perfectly valid English language phrase.

It’s used in that very iteration just about fucking everywhere in shitsubs, to the point of becoming annoying. Stock phrases are bad and hurt good writing if just thrown into the script without thought! Editors, come up with some fucking synonyms and lrn2use them! Really, it’s all the editors’ fault.

There’s nothing we can do [about it].
      It’s inevitable.
      It’s fate.
Nothing can be done about it.
      There’s no helping it.
      It was/is unavoidable.
      That’s just the way it/things is/are.
      Shit happens!

There you go! Shitty replacements from your friendly neighborhood Encoder/TS’er. YMMV.

      • Hurf says:

I’m in agreement there; the overuse does need fixing. But, alas, it seems that it can’t be helped (lol); as long as people insist in not using similar phrases, there will be overuse. So, here’s an idea: next time, how about a campaign educating the failed editors about the other choices they can make? It is likely more useful than randomly attacking the poor phrase; after all, it did nothing to deserve being overused or attacked. :)
