Eh, they made free controversial on purpose to draw more attention to it. If it wasn’t about swimming, and they weren’t shirtless half the time, it would just be another one of those shows no one remembers/cares about.
plus the nerd rage alone from Free has been worth it. I don’t care for the show but i love reading the reactions to it lol
Controversial how? Controversial in the sense that it’s a show involving a lot of hot dudes in a medium that has no shortage of shows involving hot dudes?
And yes, if the show wasn’t about swimming (i.e. the central plot point of the show), there wouldn’t be much to the show. Like how there wouldn’t be much to Gurren Lagann if it wasn’t about giant robots.

In any case, I think they did quite well with this anime adaptation so far. I quite enjoyed the opening and ending themes, as different as they are.
Episode 1 was every bit as funny, sad, tragic, and awkward as the manga. Looked like they had a lot of fun with the animation, too.
Not sure WTF was up with the narration at the beginning, though. Seemed kind of weird to just use it the one time, and then never again, like maybe someone had second thoughts.
