The “Mr. Bean” joke from ep. 2 aside, you’ve done a great job with this show. Wish there were half as good subs for the rest of Monogatari.
But that’s basically what that joke means. Except with -chan instead of Mister, and -chan doesn’t exist in English.
Except there’s no “chan” in the original, she’s just saying 萌やし uses the same kanji as 萌え, and then making a pun with もやしっ子. Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s completely untranslatable, but I still don’t like turning kanji wordplay into “Mr. Bean”.
How would you translate it then?
No fucking clue. I mean, I’d keep the kanji references because this is Nishio Ishin and it’s kind of a signature thing, but I can’t think of a good way to deal with the もやしっ子 thing. I’m not sure what you were talking about with the -chan stuff, though.
I just misremembered. Anyway, I’m not sure you should complain if you can’t think of anything better. And keeping kanji references is silly. This is an English translation, not some made-up language that combines English and Japanese.

That’s the kind of argument fanboys use when you say you don’t like something they do, so I’m going to pretend you didn’t write that.
The kanji stuff is personal preference, I suppose. I think it’s too big a part of Monogatari and Nishio’s style to simply erase them, but I know you guys tend to prefer localizing everything. With all that said, I still think you did a great job on this show, this is a fairly minor complaint, if you can even call it that.
No, it’s pretty valid here. What’s the point in complaining when you don’t have anything better to offer? Seriously, people complained about so many things we did in this show and never did anyone offer a better solution. It’s just complain, complain, complain.
And that is ridiculous. Kanji doesn’t exist in English regardless of who the author is. If you think not keeping kanji in subs is localizing, then I feel sorry for you.

Huzzah! Series over. Bit of an abrupt end, but overall good. On to the novels now. Much more enjoyable to go from visual adaptation to print than vice versa.
