I’ll probably sound like an idiot, but here goes nothing:
I play Z+angband from time to time, a text based game. In it, you can play as a Titan. The description it uses for titans is the same as how those things look in SnK. Very humanoid, larger than giants, with some towering into the sky. If I had to name them based on appearances, I’d call them titans with creepy smiles.

I wasn’t oversimplifying your argument, I was pointing out the logical contradiction between the typical Commie translation style and the decision to use Old English.
I’m sure there’s some sort of rational for the decision that I haven’t cared enough to look for. The existence of the rational still wouldn’t really explain the juxtaposition.

Strawman = Oversimplification of opposing argument to make it unfairly easier to deny. I wasn’t oversimplifying the argument of using Eoten, I was pointing out the contradiction of using Eoten against standard Commie translation style which appears to be localizing to the common vernacular.

When you consider the number of people who’ve bitched about the massive dissertation Margaan wrote on this topic, it’s kind of surprising how few of them have actually read it.
There is no “correct” way to use it, because it hasn’t been in the English language for 500 years. That’s why it’s labelled as Old English, it’s no longer grammatically correct to use it.
Plus, this series takes place in the future and the characters speak normal Japanese, so using archaic words that aren’t in the English language anymore instead of “titans” makes zero sense, not to mention being unnecessary and distasteful.
Changing the official English title of the series just exacerbated the retardedness of it all. It’s not only a slap in the face to the author, but I’m pretty sure his title was good enough considering how popular his franchise is.
Not to mention that “The Eotena Onslaught” doesn’t even mean the same thing as “Attack on Titan”. The story is 100% about humans trying to attack the titans, not vice versa. If they wanted it to be called “The Titan Attack” then it’d have been set during the time period that the titans first appeared in the world.
People come up with horrifically bad ideas all the time, but there must be no QC process since it wasn’t vetoed right at the beginning. I guess you don’t need donations that badly when you’re going out of your way to ruin the subs on the most popular show in recent years.

This happens very often. People just normally don’t already know what the English title is so they don’t notice the change or they don’t mind the change.

Not that anyone actually subbing the show really cares, but it’s had absolutely no effect on them as you should be able to see.
I say that there is no correct way because the word possesses inflected forms that simply have no place in contemporary English grammar. Claiming otherwise would be like arguing that there is a “correct” way to incorporate Romance language verb tenses into English.
Frankly disappointed to hear that you’ve yet to get rid of that editor. Since he appears to be such a stickler for “accurate” names, he should head off and create his own group: Pompous-Faggot-Subs.
There’s clearly a need for that group, so why don’t you spearhead it instead of telling us how to run ours? If all you’re going to do is run your mouth about someone you don’t even know, kindly fuck off.
Considering we’re talking about someone who wrote a 5000-word self-congratulatory “dialogue” to justify his obtuse editing choice, I think I’ll pass on that.

The English language is nearly entirely bereft of declension. The use of grammatical cases that do not exist in the language would be no different from insisting on respecting the gender case of foreign loanwords despite it being completely unnatural to the native English speaker.

No, that’s not what I mean. In short, my position is that it’s impossible to argue for a “correct” use of ‘Eoten’ in English because regardless of how it’s used, it will end up violating either the word’s intrinsic inflection or English grammar rules.
By the way, note that eoten refers to frost giants specifically – from which we derive the words yeti (frost man) and ettin (giant). The simple fact that the anime’s giants have no association with frost should invalidate any use of the term.

Although I don’t remember the specifics, I think he only included a brief primer on declension, but never justified its use in a modern English context. And if you’re referring to the ‘frost giant’ argument, I don’t recall him addressing that at all.

I don’t see why people want Titan so badly. One, it doesn’t sound as good nor does it fit the original Japanese well. Second, suddenly switching to Titan creates inconsistency which creates a bad release.
The editor will probably release a fixed version anyways.

It’s not Kodansha Comics USA, it’s the author and Kodansha Japan. The English title was chosen by Japanese staff, not the English-language manga translator.
Did anyone ever consider just calling them giants? Seems to be the most applicable term for the eotitans.
Or actually, fuck that, just call em eotitans and everyone will be trolled.
P.S.: It’s a fun show, you need to have some serious OCD to really be bothered by either translation.

I really don’t care which one you guys stick with though, you’re one of the few groups that actually realizes the importance of decent english, just curious since you guys are usually pretty straightforward with translation choices.

Personally hoping for a v3 with eotan, seriously come to accept that as the true translation, guess it helps I had not prior exposure to the before watching your subs. Still the argument from episode 1 on why eotan was chosen won me over.

Personally I think it would be fine to treat Eotan like Sheep(first example word to come to mind) and regardless how many your talking about it still uses the same word.
Seriously why does it matter if you don’t know what the word means. It’s common as hell in anime, manga, light novels etc to give things bizarre names. Not to mention all the obscure references that few outside of Japan would know.
Just think of all the crazy names we see for various mecha in shows. What the hell is a Geass? bet no-one knew before the show(or manga or whatever the original is derived from). Various namings of spiritual powers or magic.
It either gets explained or you naturally come to understand what its referring to as the show progresses.

It just irks me that the translation by the anime staff was originally titan and they actually look like titans (to me at least). Deviating from that for no reason other than the preference of an editor is aggravating.
To me, this comes across as the editor changing things to his/her liking, just because he/she can. I have no interest in his or her personal preference in the matter.

Translation and editing involve personal judgment and bias pretty much by definition. If you’re uncomfortable with that, learn the language yourself.
This just goes to show you that no matter what you do, you’re going to have those who are unappreciative.
If this had been released at a later date when the editor was available, people would be complaining about Commie’s tardiness with upload. Also, people still would be bitching about the Eotena usage.
Personally, I will be making no such complaints, but I would like there to be a v3 release. I don’t mind the Latin declensions and I’m quite cognizant of the word means. I just prefer a consistent stream for later viewing. Until then, I will watch this regardless.
It’s likely that there will be batches/BDs done of this, by us.

Finally, Eoten was just nonsense, no one uses old english to sub modern shows. Titan is more fitting.

Using Titan over Eoten or Eotena(s) made this particular episode much more understandable.
For purity reasons, Eoten is probably closer at home to the original Japanese. That being said, this is a fansub so real accuracy went out the window when English was put in anyways.
