Had no issues prior to this – but you can skip to 17:41 and continue as normal instead of raging :)

VLC is very relevant to the problem apparently. Try MPC-HC or mplayer2 or mpv instead.
This video freezes in mplayer2 at the line that says “With an exclamation point for some reason.” So it might not be a VLC problem.
Sounds like a libass problem.
