Official 10bit Notice

Remember this post?

Well the time has come; Both CCCP and CoreAVC now support 10bit.

Playback: (Note that you only need one of these, not all, to play 10bit)
CCCP
CoreAVC 3.0.1 (fixes a few things)
MPlayer(2)
MadVR
LAV Video

We won’t be labeling anything specifically as 10bit, because since when did we label anything anyways. Also if we did label anything it would be [10bit] and not [Hi10P] because Hi10P sounds retarded as fuck.

Edit@Tai:
I suggest everyone should read some research papers about hi10p at http://x264.nl/x264/ (Atm those last 3 .pdf’s at the bottom) before posting in this post in order to avoid embarrassing yourselves on teh internetz.

Arnavion edit:
Holy shit 500+ comments and it’s the same discussion over and over and FUCKING OVER again. Jesus H Christ do you know how annoying it is to go through butthurt after asspained butthurt comment and approve them all? Comments are FUCKING closed.

  1. Herp-Derp says:

As one that does not like change, will hopefully wait for VLC to support 10bit! Hopefully that day is soon.

  2. random says:

    http://twitter.com/#!/CoreCodec/status/112441599811788801

I assume you’ll update the link when 3.0.2 is out?

  3. Shadow220 says:

While CoreAVC has problems with 10bit, do old 8bit vids still work well? dont know if i wanna update now or just wait for 3.0.2 or a stable build that plays 10bit flawlessly or near flawless

  4. alex says:

I agree that Hi10P sounds retarded. I grimace every time someone says it

  5. Anonymous says:

Time for blurry releases? Guess I’m no longer going with Commie.

  6. mannus says:

I am using MPC-HC w/ madVR and it works just fine for 10-bit. It was the easiest to configure also.

  7. Break says:

nobody replied before.. so.. IS THERE ANY CHANCE THE “SPLAYER” WILL UPDATED TO SUPPORT 10bit SOON??? OR ALREADY IS??

  8. qaz says:

I think it should be useful to note that LAV decoder is 1.5 times faster than CoreAVC 3.0.1 on 10 bit content. Maybe once CoreAVC was fastest h264 decoder, but now definitely it isn’t.

    • erejnion says:

CoreAVC is used mainly by people with old computers that cannot really handle the hd material well with other decoders.

Do you know what does that mean? LAV’s recommended 512MB gpu memory do not exactly fall under the “old pc” category, so people using CoreAVC don’t really care.

      • qaz says:

What? I’m talking about pure CPU decoding performance. “LAV’s recommended” or “gpu memory” make no sense here.

        Also, fixed:
CoreAVC is used mainly by people with old brains that cannot really handle the thinking about decoders.

There are better (but several different) solutions in every single way of CoreAVC usage.

  9. DSP says:

    >click on .pdf

    >it’s a fucking university presentation

I WATCH ANIME TO UNWIND FROM THAT SHIT
I’LL JUST BELIEVE YOU THAT IT’S BETTER OK?

  10. mangamuscle says:

You should add ffdshow (2011-09-12) to the list of 10bit enabled codec packs

  11. Awe says:

K-Lite codec pack also supports 10bit decoding.

  12. Kyller713 says:

I switched to this from k-lite and now when i try to run certain videos, mostly commiesubs videos ironically, they stop after a split second of play but the audio keeps running. Would someone help this poor fool.

  13. Kyller713 says:

    You are Gād, tanks.

  14. Lime says:

Which CCCP version has 10bit support?

2011.07.30 or the most recent 2011.09.03 beta? Or do both support it?

  15. Another Anon says:

Why are you guys changing to 10bit. The sleight file compression doesn’t outweigh the processing power needed to play it.

  16. thunderau says:

What a bunch of wingers & wieners we have here. If it wasn’t for people adopting new standards as they come out we would still be watching VHS tapes.

It’s not hard to find a player that supports Hi10 here’s just a few:- Potplayer, Mplayer, MPC-HC, and VLC (nightly Builds). For the best results I suggest using madVR renderer. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146228

  17. Ghostalker says:

No problems playing 10bit video on Klite now. Playing 10bit video on Klite was a problem for me before, but with updates that’s now officially supporting it, it’s no longer a problem.

I’m into this, I guess the resistance to 10bit should decrease eventually overtime with players eventually supporting it one by one.

  18. Hasewo says:

I know it’s OT, but will you sub the Kaminomi OAV? It just came out.

Regarding the 10-bit, I don’t mind. Even though a double release (8-bit + 10-bit) would be the best choice, for the time being, at least until most people have a system powerful enough to play 10-bit seamlessly.

    • erejnion says:

and this is not exactly true, since lav video on 10bit outperforms ffmpeg from one-two years ago on 8bit. if your system is new, you probably can play 10bit seamlessly, and if it is old, you couldn’t play h264 seamlessly anyway.

but that about KamiNomi, seconded. the release we have now is with pretty bad video quality.

  19. sto says:

sadly that means watching all 10bit vids on my computer instead of my media player box + tv combo. either that or finding a different subber.

  20. kuler says:

mac only as far as i can tell.
anyone using mplayer osx extended is in luck with 10bit playback.
some guy wrote a binary for it, just stick the file in the app package container.
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QNBWURWR

  21. Mokuton says:

what happened to densetsu no yuusha no densetsu’s blurays?

  22. Captain67 says:

Tried the new CoreAVC, which is supposed to support 10-bit, but there were still artifacts and color issues. Switched the CCCP native decoder, works perfectly. I miss having the saturation and contrast controls CoreAVC had though. The CCCP one also seems to use more CPU power, but only slightly. Hopefully Core Codec will fix it soon with a newer release.

  23. Tomodachi says:

My atom netbook can play the 1080p 10-bit files I’ve tried on it fine with subtitle animations turned off, then again I normally use 720p on it and save the 1080p’s for my i7 desktop. No idea how peoples computers can struggle with 10-bit when my atom handles them fine..

  24. rikka says:

Can you please complete Dantalian in 10bit format? 1 episode left. Thanks. :)

  25. rikka says:

    I mean 8 bit. >_<

  26. pantsface says:

I got 7-30 and the new 9-25 beta’s of CCCP.
Not playing your Stiens;Gate OP properly, broken blocks, bad colours etc.
    Player is newest MPC-HC.

    Why you sucks?

    • yep says:

make sure you uninstall every instance of CCCP, MPC, ffdshow, Haali, CoreAVC, madVR, K-Lite, or anything else related to these. then reinstall the latest CCCP.

if it still doesn’t work then I don’t know what the fuck. I’ve played the 10-bit Steins;Gate OP and ED just fine on CCCP alone, CCCP with CoreAVC 3.0.1, and MPC-HC using madVR. there’s no problem with the videos.

      • pantsface says:

I uninstalled again, and unregistered some relevant filters.
Then re-installed the beta, with the MPC-HC from CCCP.
        Everything’s working now.

So it was either some filters lingering, or MPC-HC’s versions are different.

  27. Raziel says:

Well this sux… there are no standalone players that I know of that supports the 10bit format :(.

As far as I know, the chipset itself won’t support it, therefore, none of the 10bit releases can be played on existing players like the WD TV Live, even with firmware updates!

Guess it’s time to find an alternative subbing group if they do not intend to release in 8bit as well.

  28. WTF says:

I’m not a fucking computer programmer. Does this shit work in WMP or not?

    • The MoonDoggie says:

Gonna try to provoke some answers:

The answer to your question is no. Unless you have the current version of CCCP. The encoders got selfish and just went on to create all this trouble just to make us facepalm, making up fancy reasons along the way….

Yup, unless they really gave us solutions for all our problems, there will be people who will disapprove of this. I mean if it’s so hard to encode in 8bit like some reason out so they can transfer to 10-bit why not just quit fansubbing altogether?

      • RHExcelion says:

Except that would affect tens if not hundreds of thousands of other people with an IQ of over 100. If, instead, you stopped watching anime forever because of your incapability to upgrade some software, it would affect the entirety of one person.

        • The MoonDoggie says:

So finally you answered! I knew you were just lurking like a troll…

And instead of incapability, say instead “unexpected technical limitations”….

So? Isn’t it about time you answer the question? How can you convert a 10bit MKV file? Really I have been asking and you finally took the bait.

        • The MoonDoggie says:

          Oh and BTW:

If you don’t answer or/and removed my post, that means you really don’t understand the 10-bit like us and just “went with the flow”. I know you can read this. I just need an answer or a tip(which is not rude). You suddenly required all the people who support you guys to learn encoding so we can watch your subs when you pulled this. It isn’t funny.

And as for your 100 IQ comment, mine’s beyond 150.

  29. durr says:

Well done breaking hardware compatibility with pretty much every media player device for absolutely nothing. Not everyone uses a PC with a media player to watch stuff.

  30. brfy says:

You should add ffdshow tryouts it seems the latest nightlies have had support since rev 3958

  31. The MoonDoggie says:

Hey, are ther any demuxers and converters that can demux the subs from a 10bit MKV file and remerge them? I don’t like the mkv format and usually watch my anime on my phone as mp4 format, the phone is a
    Nokia.

  32. The MoonDoggie says:

    Oh and BTW:

    @RHExcelion

No one can understand the PFDs. We don’t know anything about video conversion or SDIs and stuff. So can you translate to us video ignoramus what it says on the pdf? :P

No really we don’t know how we are gonna convert this to any other format.

  33. kuroshi_nazo says:

Suriously, does anyone but me use Shark007 to watch anime?

  34. sabot3 says:

    source –> mpc-hc 3748 –> lavsplitter 0.36–> lav video decoder 0.36–> madvr 0.74–> TV

    lavsplitter 0.36 –> ffdshow audio 39 rev 3984 clsid –> reclock 1.8.7.7–> TV

    works perfectly fine

  35. Brazil-Fernando says:

I watch the episodes on my Galaxy S ii, but with the new format it is not playing as smooth…

  36. user says:

Unfortunately everyone that uses hardware based decodes and media streaming with devices like Boxee is now hosed. Call us silly, but we like watching our anime on a TV. 10 bit is hurting a lot of people, because a lot of hardware will not support it. Check the boxee forum on 10 bit support to see what it is doing to people.

    • RHExcelion says:

You could buy a 100ft DVI>HDMI cable for the price of a Boxee. If your computer is more than 100ft from your TV then you should have enough money to afford another computer.

  37. sabot3 says:

You can still watch it on a TV Screen even with 10 bit.

    • user says:

A boxee player is a set top media device. It only supports 8bit. A lot of people use various media players to watch their anime, which only play 8bit.
Me, I have been using hardware acceleration on my video card, so now I am sunk. Like a lot of linux people I have an older computer.

Just trying to let you know why people are howling. Because not everyone is fixed with a codec pack, a long cable isn’t going to help!

There are very simply many playing solutions out there that people were using other than a standard computer that with the change to 10bit leaves them in the cold.

  38. user says:

Let me add this bit too.. 10bit does not support vdpau output, nor does mplayer2. This is a fair issue with a lot of linux based playback.

    • erejnion says:

wait, why would 10bit not support vdpau output?

      • user says:

I think it is a hardware issue, the nvidia linux vdpau does not support 10 bit. The Mplayer2 doesn’t support vdpau anymore..which is the only way I can get good playback.

10 bit is not supported by a LOT of hardware guys.

This shoots in the foot a lot of fans that were really enjoying streaming to TVs … streaming.. I repeat. It stops use on netbooks, pads, phones, ect.. all that could play 8 bit fine.

        This is crazy!

  39. sabot3 says:

The above aren’t a codec pack.

    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191

nvidia –> lav video decoder –> properties –> hardware acceleration –> enable cuda –> click ok?

Isn’t HEVC going to come in 2013…?

  40. Kael says:

Uninstalled every codec and media player on my system, then installed the latest CCCP and used its copy of MPC-HC. Your 10-bit version of C³ crashes MPC-HC on startup. :(

Tried other builds of MPC-HC as well, no luck. Tried installing the latest ffdshow by itself, no luck. Tried 64-bit builds instead of 32-bit builds and no luck.

Is there a particular player you can recommend that can actually play this encode without crashing immediately?

  41. sabot3 says:

    Uninstall CCCP

    http://xhmikosr.1f0.de/index.php?folder=bXBjLWhj

    Download mpc-hc 3751 x86 installer ( the bottom one )

    Also dl from this link

    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191

get the 32bit ver or x86

    and run install_splitter and install_video ( set to prefer in mpc-hc 3751 )

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/SVN%20builds%20by%20clsid/generic%20builds/

get ffdshow from that 9-22-2011 ver

block ffdshow video ( and lower merit on ffdshow audio )

    dl madvr 0.74

uncheck all the internal filters in mpc-hc

  42. TheEducatedMan says:

Geez, I don’t know what all you guys are getting worked up about. I downloaded the very latest CCCP player and 10bit works like a charm for me. Plus I very much like the decrease in file size without the loss in quality.

You guys can’t keep living in the past. Eventually 10bit will the the standard, so just update your players. Shouldn’t be too hard.

    • nixo says:

It goes without saying that it eventually will, but for now it certainly isn’t, with one and a half decoders supporting it, so I just cannot see any valid reason to force it down people’s throats. It would take no real effort for fansubbers to make 8-bit releases along with 10-bit ones for some time for people to get used to them. This way they could objectively prove the advantages of Hi10p to everyone who still doubts AND stop that endless butthurt that goes on on every anime forum and image board.
Unless there’s no such a big advantage, or making people butthurt was their only reason, of course.

      • RHExcelion says:

No real effort? Do you understand it takes me two to four hours per 720p encode on a 4ghz i7? 4 shows a day and you want me to double the amount of encodes? Will you pay for a better computer for me?

        • nixo says:

Pretty much yes, waiting for computer to do a job doesn’t count as a real effort for me. I mean, you don’t even have to sit all this time in front of it, right? Also you don’t have to release both at the same time, you can delay 8 bit for a day or so, if you want to promote 10 bit so much.

PS maybe I am missing something, but number of Commie’s releases listed on TT averages to less than 10 per week (don’t really know if you encode for other groups though).

          • RHExcelion says:

I would like to use my personal computer, because you know, it’s personal. It’s kinda hard to do anything with 100% CPU and 11/12GB of RAM used. And plus, that was just TV encodes. The T&B BDs take 12-18 hours per 1080p encode.

            • Ae says:

Then why don’t you quit? You would have more time for your personal computer, right?
              Everybody would be happy.

              • omgwtfbbq says:

Shut the hell up guys. These guys are subbing your god damn shows every week and you want them to quit? Go to hell! If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

Keep up the good work Commie!

              • TheEducatedMan says:

Ok, now this is just getting stupid. Telling the guy who’s working his butt out to give you quality subbed anime to just quit is retarded. You’re taking for granted the effort these guys are putting in so that they can sub the anime you wanna watch. Next time think before you say anything coz you just might end up regretting it.

              • erejnion says:

Ahahhahah, yeah, if RHE quits “everybody” will be happy.

            • nixo says:

No objections to this. Though I bet you waste at least an hour of your personal time a day for the past few days calling people fa… er, i mean telling them why they are wrong in not liking the superior 10-bit quality.
Still, if one encoder is lacking firepower to do both 8 and 10 bit, I think you (I mean group as a whole, not you personally) could hire a dedicated 8-bit encoder, there are people doing it anyways (but without proper QC and quality RAWs a group could provide), and even in case he is slow, lazy, or gets bored and leaves after a month no one will lose more than they do now. Or delay switching to 10 bit at all until it is more or less commonly supported by software. It’s not like forcing a part of anime community to 10bit will speed up software development process any bit.

              • RHExcelion says:

No, I don’t. I barely have time encoding all this shit in between my classes and assignments. Hiring another encoder would just be inefficient, and it’s been our policy to release one thing in the highest possible quality, with the lowest possible file size.

            • qaz says:

              >It’s kinda hard to do anything with 100% CPU and 11/12GB of RAM used.

Come on, it’s not that hard – just need to set encoding to idle priority. And 1GB of free RAM is ok too if you are careful. What really makes computer unusable is I/O bottleneck but you say you are cpu limited, so it’s not the case.

I’m also interested how you end up with 11GB used on 720p processing.

(On the 8/10 bit issue: everyone who can’t play 10 bit should just [s]die[/s] learn to re-encode and spend that day or so yourself.)

  43. sabot3 says:

stop buying amd/ati since 2005 and should help playback…if they couldn’t uninstall or update their files…

    • user says:

So essentially… what you are saying is that you don’t care that anyone with amd/ati hardware is SOL with your releases, and you don’t care?

  44. Someguy says:

Excuse me for being retarded, but I can’t get anything to work to play 10bit vidyuhs.
I’ve lurked around for days and days trying basically the same “Uninstall and reinstall” crap over and over.

I have my GPU’s latest drivers (ATi HD 6950) and all that good stuff, but I’ve yet to find anything that plays videos without horrible discoloration and tearing.
    IE: http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7351/utwc3cubexcursedxcuriou.jpg

    Video Techtarded, halp?

    • anon says:

Try something that doesn’t rely on DirectShow, like mplayer/mplayer2 or VLC nightly.

      • Someguy says:

Got it working. Friend that does encoding himself stepped me through a custom install of codecs, and told me what settings in MPC to check/uncheck to get it to play properly.

  45. sabot3 says:

I’ve only seen that with coreavc 3.x.x but no problems with lav video

  46. Galio says:

    Hi, guys
try PotPlayer (aka KMPlayer reloaded), more info here
    http://imouto.my/configuring-potplayer-for-gpu-accelerated-video-playback-with-dxva-or-cuda-and-also-high-performance-software-decoding/
It works correctly even without external codecs. The latest version (beta) is 1.5.29803 (1.5.29795 plus update), see
    http://www.dvbsupport.net/download/index.php?act=category&id=16
    I recommend version 32b, 64b (1.5.29795) was unstable (XP64b).

  47. dango says:

I’m sorry but anyone encoding in 10bits in 2011 is either retarded or a douchebag.

  48. The Moondoggie says:

”I’m sorry but anyone encoding in 10bits in 2011 is either retarded or a douchebag.”

Not unless they give out two things including the 10bit mkv standard:

    1. they continue to give out AVI versions.

    2. they give out ALL the new tools that would be compatible to 10bit.

@Everyone having trouble with the new 10bit encoding, but has a DSi or 3DS and would like their anime on the go… like me.

X Vid 4 PSP with K-Lite codec installed (updated recently to support that 10 bit stuff) it will convert to nearly any format iPhone, PS3, PSP, DS etc.

Use Moonshell to play the converted MKV files to DS.
